Deputy injured after sleepy driver crosses center line causing crash

A Martin County deputy was injured Saturday after a driver apparently fell asleep and crossed the center line striking the sheriff department’s Humvee.

Reserve Deputy Jason Greene was driving the Humvee escorting the 2018 Jeep & Bike Ride when he stopped to assist at a non-injury crash near the intersection of Red School Road and U.S. 50 at about 3:22 p.m.

After the completion of the investigation, Greene left the scene of the accident at Red School Road and proceeded to head west on US Highway 50. At about 4:10 p.m., the Humvee was struck on the driver’s side when a silver Subaru, being driven by Ethan Aubrey of Bedford, crossed the center line.

During the accident investigation, it was determined that Aubrey fell asleep at the wheel and did not awaken until the moment of impact to the Humvee.

Greene sustained a broken foot and minor contusions in the accident and was transported by Deputy John Wright to Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center for treatment. Aubrey received minor cuts and abrasions to his hands but refused treatment. Two additional passengers in the Humvee were uninjured.

Responding agencies were the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Shoals Fire Department, Martin County Ambulance and Indiana Conservation Officer Doane.
