Delia Dona Nelson

Delia Dona Nelson, age 90, of Huntingburg, passed away at 3:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at The Waters of Huntingburg.

She was born January 10, 1922 to Charles and Martha (Sollman) Katter of Stendal, the youngest of 10 children. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Stendal. She graduated from Stendal High School in 1939 and from the Deaconess School of Nursing in 1944. On June 29, 1952 she married Paul Egbert. He died in 1969. On January 16, 1979 she married Dr. Elmer Nelson, retired Bishop of the American Lutheran Church. He died June 19, 1981.

Delia was a registered nurse and worked and lived in the Huntingburg area except for the time she and Dr. Nelson lived in Thomasboro, Illinois. After Dr. Nelson’s death, Delia returned to complete her nursing career at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Huntingburg and the Providence Home in Jasper. She was a dedicated nurse for 56 years before she retired due to health problems. Delia was a charter member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Huntingburg where she was an active member from 1963 until it closed in 2009. At that time she returned to her home church, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Stendal. She served her church in many different positions at the local, conference and district levels over the years. She was actively involved in nurse’s organizations and St. Joseph’s Hospital; and after retirement Delia volunteered her services to many local organizations. Delia will be remembered as a dedicated person who joyfully cared for and served others.

In addition to her deceased husbands, Delia was preceded in death by: four sisters- Helen Katter, Gladys Katter, Esther Hagemeyer Wise, and Ruby Oxley of Stendal; five brothers- Alva, Roy and Warren of Stendal, Raymond of Holland, and Noble of Newburgh; and one stepdaughter, Fay Egbert Albee.

-Five stepchildren from the marriage to Dr. Nelson – Duane Nelson, Daniel Nelson, David Nelson, Leah Nelson Haussman and Linda Nelson Horn;

-by step grandchildren and step great, great-great, and great-great-great grandchildren;

-by nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews, great-great nieces & nephews, and great-great-great nieces & nephews.

Funeral services for Delia Nelson will be held at 2:00 p.m., E.D.T., on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Stendal with burial to follow at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Cemetery. Pastor Ed Wicks will officiate the services.

Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements. All of the public visitation will be held at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. Friends may call for visitation at the church from 12:00-2:00 p.m., Saturday, the day of the funeral. Memorial contributions may be made to: St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in Stendal.
