Dads celebrated with free Father’s Day event at League Stadium
This Father’s Day weekend a group of area churches and businesses is celebrating fatherhood by showing the breakout hit “Courageous” at League Stadium.
Working on a short deadline, Kim Kendall with the Faith Renewal Committee of St. Mary Catholic Church in Huntingburg received approval to hold the event at Huntingburg Park at the May 21 Park Board meeting. Faced with less than a month to finish preparing for the event, Kendall requested a date in September as well. Fortunately the group was able to finish the preparations and the event, “Celebrate Fathers”, will happen.
Along with the acclaimed movie, there will be live music, food venders and over 100 door prizes including rounds of golf, tickets to amusement parks and even free oil changes.
“Courageous”, made on a budget under $2 million dollars, was considered a breakout hit grossing $34 million in 17 weeks. The movie recounts the bonding of five men after a tragedy inspires them to take a solemn vow to be better fathers and men of honor.
On Saturday the event begins in the park with live music and free hotdogs and nachos from 7 to 8:30 p.m. when the doors to League Stadium open. The movie starts at 9 p.m. after a tribute from Huntingburg Mayor Denny Spinner and area clergy.
The movie is rated PG-13, so for parents with younger children the Tri-County YMCA in Ferdinand is offering free activities for children ages 5 to 15 beginning at 8:30 p.m. Parents need to register in advance by contacting Christine Kleaving at the Y at 367-2323.
The Huntingburg Teen Outback is also hosting a carnival night for children in fourth through fifth grade. The carnival starts at 7 p.m. and is $3 per child.
“It’s open to the public and we just want to encourage guys of all ages as fathers to come out and enjoy themselves,” Kim Kendall said. “We just want to honor fathers in the area and give them a gift.”
