Commissioners seeking new Holland trash collection site

The Dubois County Commissioners were informed that the trash/recyclable collection site in Holland will close within the next six months due to a change in ownership.

Highway Superintendent Donnie Lueken told the commissioner that the new owner does not plan to continue the current arrangement, which means the county will have to search for a new location.

Lueken said he spoke with Blesch about the land they owned, but found it was too hilly to be suitable for a new site. He also talked to the owner of the land near Bob’s Liquor, but they were already in discussions with the Holland Volunteer Fire Department about the possibility of using the land. “That’s two options gone right off the bat,” Lueken said.

The potential closure creates concerns about waste disposal options for area residents. Huntingburg is the next closest location, and Lueken worried people may resort to illegal dumping rather than travel there to dispose of their trash and recyclables.

Lueken is seeking out potential locations and the commissioners are considering whether to lease the property or purchase property for the trash site.
