Collision near Birdseye sends two to hospital

Two people were taken to Memorial Hospital after a nearly head-on collision Thursday evening on Bergs Lane near Birdseye.

Deputies were called to the collision with injuries at about 5:46 p.m. They determined that Amy Schaber, 42, of W. Rowland Dr., Birdseye, was southbound on Bergs Lane in a 1997 Ford Taurus driving at an unsafe speed. According to police, the Taurus had crossed the center line, and as it approached the intersection with Kings Ridge Road, it struck a northbound 2006 Toyota minivan driven by Kerri King of Kings Ridge Road.

The offset collision badly damaged both vehicles, and both drivers complained of pain. Schaber was treated at the scene and then taken to Memorial Hospital by ambulance. King was also treated at the scene but was then taken to Memorial Hospital by private vehicle.

Both vehicles were considered total losses and had to be towed from the scene by wreckers from Bergs and Luegers.

The Birdseye Town Marshal, an Indiana Conservation Officer and Birdseye Volunteer Fire Department first responders assisted also.
