Cheryl Dee Fenton, 72, Seymour

Cheryl Dee Fenton, 72, passed away on January 2, 2023. She was a long-time resident of Seymour.

She was born December 23, 1950, in Huntingburg to John R. Ziegler and Merties Baker Ziegler, who preceded her in death.

She was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church in Haysville.

She was first united in marriage to Levi E. Nigg in 1972, and the union was blessed with a daughter.

On July 20, 1985, she married Thomas J. Fenton at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Seymour. He preceded her in death on June 15, 2020. They were blessed with a son.

She is survived by one daughter, Jennifer Nigg (Randy Clark) of Madison; one son, Andrew J. Fenton (Rachel Hickman) of Seymour; two brothers, Ken Ziegler and Van Ziegler (Nancy), both of Jasper; two grandchildren, Molly Josephine Fenton and Linden Wade Hickman, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was a graduate of Dubois High School class of 1968. She later attended Indiana University, where she earned her bachelor of science and master’s degree in education. She was a life member of the IU Alumni Association.

Cheryl was a teacher for 46 years, working at Austin Junior High School and most of her career for Seymour Middle School as a seventh-grade Language Arts teacher. She was also a former owner of Apple Auto Sales.

She served as president of the Seymour Education Association for 29 years, as well as serving as board member and Council President of the ISTA Board of Directors. She was an ISTA Retired life member.

Cheryl was a Girl Scout and Boy Scout Leader, United Way Board President, and both member and past president of the Delta Kappa Gamma Education Society.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, as well as a vacation bible school teacher and coordinator.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Voss & Sons Funeral Home, 316 N. Chestnut Street, Seymour. Rev. James Rodriguez, Jr. will officiate a funeral service at 2 p.m., Saturday, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 605 S Walnut Street, Seymour, IN 47274. She will be laid to rest at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Seymour.
