Ceremony planned for new sign to Ireland park

This Sunday, September 30, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. the Ireland Girl Scout Troop 357 Silver Award Project team will dedicate their completed Silver Award Project to the community of Ireland.

Nine Cadette Girl Scouts — Brenna Hildenbrand, Brianna Williams, Cheyenne Scherle, Karis Wigand, Karleigh LeMond, Kella Lichlyter, Madison Heim, Rachel Hollinden and Taryn Schmitt — were approved by the Girl Scouts of Southwestern Indiana Girl Scout Council to proceed with their Girl Scout Silver Award Project of replacing the Keith Gettelfinger Park sign located near the Ireland Elementary School.

The Ireland Lions Club was approved as the project sponsor and was the organization who installed the original park sign. The Girl Scouts were supported by local area businesses and organizations throughout their project. Those included Dubois County Block and Brick, 2 Sign Guys, Brescher Landscaping, Ireland Youth Sports and the Ireland Lions Club.

The Scouts visited each of these businesses to learn about the products and services they manufacture and provide, during the process.

Each Girl Scout committed 25 hours to the Silver Award Project to date.

The new sign and landscaped area will welcome visitors to the Keith Gettelfinger park and Ireland Youth Sports complex for generations to come. The park is named in memory of and dedication to the legacy of Mr. Keith Gettelfinger who was a lifelong educator, coach and friend to the youth of not only Ireland but the youth throughout the state of Indiana.

Mr. Gettelfinger served as the Ireland High School principal from 1965 until Ireland and Jasper consolidated into Greater Jasper and the Ireland High School closed; then he became the principal of Ireland Junior High until his passing in 1977.

The Girl Scouts’ families, the Keith Gettlefinger family, all of the sponsors and supporters of the project and the public are invited to attend the dedication ceremony.
