Caution! Runners and walkers coming through

The Heartland Half Marathon & 5K committee asks anyone driving in and around Jasper on the Saturday morning of Labor Day weekend to be on the lookout for road closures and runners and walkers. Please use caution and have patience in waiting at intersections if runners are coming through. Many of these individuals have spent months training for this event, and we want to make this a great and safe event for the participants!

Road closures will begin at 6:30 a.m. to approximately 7:35 a.m. on Saturday, September 2nd and will include Third Avenue from Azura Grill & Café to Mill Street and Mill Street from Third to Ninth Street.

Another way residents can help make this event a success is by cheering on the runners. Signs, music, or just good, old-fashioned clapping along with words of support go a long way in encouraging a runner or walker to keep pushing toward the finish line. The race begins at 7:30 a.m. (ET) on September 2nd. Let’s show this year’s participants what Hoosier hospitality is all about!

The half marathon route begins on the Third Avenue (Patoka River) bridge, then heads north on Mill Street, west on Ninth Street, south on Main Street, west on Second Street, south on Indiana Street, and crosses Hwy 231 at First Avenue. The route then proceeds south on Truman Road, south on St. Charles Street, west on 12th Avenue, and south on Kimball Boulevard. The route then continues west on 100 South, north on Old Huntingburg Road, west on Division Road, north on Sunshine Drive, east on Shelyn Drive, north on Kluemper Road, east on Andrew Lane, north on St. Charles Street, and east on Northwood Avenue and 30th Street to Cathy Lane. The last section of the route takes the runners south on Cherry Street to 15th Street, where they will enter the Jasper Riverwalk to run through the finish line at Buehler Plaza.

Registrations for the races are still being accepted. Registration can be made online at heartlandhalfmarathon.com or raceroster.com. The registration fee for the half marathon is $70. The 5K registration fee is $25. For the Team Challenge (a group of four running the half marathon as a relay), registration fee is $100 per team. Pre-registrants will receive a technical shirt.

The Heartland Half Marathon & 5K Committee includes Michael Kern, Kevin Manley, Kenny Hochgesang, Whitney Hall, Amanda Tempel, Audrey Werner, Sarah Leonard, Randy Russell, Jay Kidwell, Melanie Powell, Tara Bayer, Jay Giesler, and Jamie Jahn. The majority of the proceeds from this year’s race will be given to the Phillip R. Dawkins Heart & Vascular Center at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center.
