Carl E. “Lefty-Gene”Elkins, 86

Carl E. “Lefty-Gene”Elkins, age 86 of Otwell, Indiana, passed away at 5:15 a.m. Monday (April 1, 2013), in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville, Indiana. Gene was previously a resident of St. Charles Health Campus and Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper. He also had lived at Leisure Living Apartment complex in Evansville, Indiana for ten years.
He was born in Pike County at Petersburg, Indiana, June 13, 1926; to William Oris and Ollie (Biggs) Elkins. He married Theresa M. Bahlman February, 18, 1950, (they were married for 53 years) she preceded him in death January 28, 2003.
Carl was a US Army Veteran serving during WWII in Korea. He retired from Old Ben Coal Company where he had worked for twenty years as a drag line operator and truck driver.
He is survived by his son, David Elkins and his wife Ethel, Evansville, IN; two granddaughters, Anne Marie Rogers and her husband Aaron, Jacksonville, FL, and Sarah Lynn Mallow and her husband Brian, Evansville, IN; a sister, Irma June Conrad and her husband Willis “Bill”, Otwell, IN; and a very dear friend, Mary Rita Fehr, Evansville, IN.
Preceding him in death besides his wife are one son, Donald Eugene Elkins and two daughters, Charlotte Jean Elkins and Sarah Jane Elkins. Three brothers, Howard, Kenneth and James Elkins and two sisters, Anna Mae Malin and Marilou Elkins. Also three nephews, Franklin Carl Elkins, Kenneth Michael Uppencamp and Larry Gene Elkins.
Funeral services for Carl Elkins will be held at 2:00 p. Friday, (April 5, 2013), in St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper. V.F.W. Post # 673 in Jasper will conduct military grave side rites.
Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Thursday (April 4, 2013), at the Becher-Kluesner North Chapel in Jasper.
