Jasper police made an arrest early Sunday morning after being called about a man breaking into cars around 13th and Mill streets.

Police responded to the report of a male subject wearing dark clothing attempting to break into vehicles at about 1 a.m. Police said the caller had confronted the male when he was breaking into his car and upon doing so the subject then attempted to break into another car in the area.

When police arrived, they made contact with a man matching the description given by the caller and identified him as Corey J. Turpin, 29, of 1340 1/2 Jackson St., Jasper. Police said the caller positively identified Turpin as the person he witnessed attempting to break into the vehicles.

Turpin told police he thought the vehicles he was attempting to open were his own and that he wasn’t attempting to break into them, according to authorities.

Police said that Turpin was falling down and stumbling into the street while officers were speaking with him due to his level of intoxication.

During the interaction, Jasper Dispatch notified the officers that Turpin had outstanding felony warrants for burglary and theft as well as a misdemeanor count of criminal mischief.

Officers arrested Turpin for the warrants and during processing, allegedly found a bag containing 47 grams of synthetic cannabinoid, a grinder with marijuana residue and a metal pipe with burnt marijuana residue in it on Turpin’s person.

Officers added a Level 6 felony count of possession of a synthetic cannabinoid, a Class B misdemeanor count of public intoxication and a Class C misdemeanor count of possession of paraphernalia.

He was booked into the Dubois County Security Center.
