Bus safety emphasized by local law enforcement

The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department issued a warning to all motorists to be aware of buses now that school is back in session.

According to Sheriff Donnie Lampert, the department has received multiple complaints of stop arm violations, and speeding around children and school buses.

“There is no excuse for this type of driving and the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department will not tolerate this behavior. The children of Dubois County are too valuable,” Lampert said in a press release.

He also asked that all parents and guardians to remind their children to observe traffic when getting on and off of buses.

State law requires motorists to stop when a school bus is picking up or dropping off children. Motorists must stop for school buses with their stop arm extended and red lights flashing.

This law applies to all roadways except those that are divided by a physical barrier or an unimproved median. On a divided roadway, only vehicles traveling in the same direction as the school bus are required to stop.
