Bretzville collision injures two

A head-on collision at Bretzville Junction sent two people to the hospital Monday evening.

According to the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department, 84-year-old Walter M. Vaal of Ferdinand was westbound on State Road 64 in a 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix waiting to turn left onto State Road 162 at about 6:54 p.m. Because of the time of evening and the location of the sun, Walter failed to notice a 1995 Chevrolet S10 operated by Angela S. Hopf, 51, of Birdseye, in the eastbound lane of State Road 64.

When the light at the intersection turned green, Vaal proceeded into the intersection to turn south on State Road 162 and drove into the path of Hopf’s truck. Vaal’s front driver’s side struck the front driver’s side of her vehicle.

Both drivers were safely able to exit their vehicles. Vall complained of injuries to his face and arm and Hopf had injuries to her arms, legs and chest. Both were transported to Memorial Hospital.

According to deputies, both vehicles were considered total losses.

St Anthony Volunteer Fire Department, Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services, Indiana State Police, Bergs Wrecker Service and KARS Wrecker Service assisted at the scene.
