Bombers sling second shutout in two days; stops Railroaders
Report provided by Bombers
Regular Bomber fans are familiar with the team’s sluggers, however, some may have missed the fact that the Dubois County pitching staff have put up some pretty impressive outings of their own.
Last night’s game by Zachary Aring may have been the most impressive of the season.
The Dubois County Bombers hosted the Fulton Railroaders in a showdown of the top two teams in the Ohio Valley League. For the second straight night, the Bombers rode a complete game shutout to a victory, downing the Railroaders 4-0.
After Ryan Dills shut out the Oilers Tuesday in a seven-inning doubleheader contest, Zachary Aring went the distance in last night’s victory. They were the first two shutouts of the season for the Bombers hurlers who have held opponents to a single run on six other occasions.
Aring held the league’s most potent offense to four singles, walking only two batters while striking out seven. Only one Railroader managed to advance as far as second base all night.
Aring also helped his cause with his glove, turning in three defensive gems. In the sixth, he started a double play on a sharply hit comebacker to the mound. In the eighth, he snared a liner that was destined for center field for the first out, and then made a reflexive catch on a one-hopper, tossing to first for the third out.
The Bombers threatened in almost every inning, putting runners in scoring position in six different frames.
After sitting out the last few games with a minor injury, Drake McNamara opened the second inning with a single, and came in to score on a hit by Mark Giesler.
Dubois County added two in the third inning. Daniel Johnson led off with a single and scored when Morgan DePew followed with another. A one-out base hit by McNamara gave Aring a 3-0 cushion.
Johnson doubled in the home seventh, and scored on a Nick Gobert single, making the score 4-0.
McNamara finished at 4-for-4, Gobert 3-for-3, and Johnson doubled twice to lead the 13-hit Bomber attack. Clay Reece had two of Fulton’s hits.
Aring’s seven strikeouts ties him with Fulton starting pitcher Charlie Hecht for the league lead with 33 strikeouts on the season. Both pitchers records now stand at 3-2.
Dubois County runs their winning streak to four games. It is their third string of four or more wins thus far in the season. Their league-best record improves to 18-8. Fulton falls to 15-11. The Railroaders drop into a tie for third with the idle Madisonville Miners.
Fulton hosts Hopkinsville tonight. The Bombers will be traveling to Madisonville before returning for a holiday homestand that includes games at League Stadium on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
