Bombers sitting pretty in OVL
The Dubois County Bombers rolled to their 6th victory in their last eight games, thumping the Fulton Railroaders 8-1 Wednesday night.
The win gives the Bombers sole possession of the top spot in the Ohio Valley League with one-quarter of the season complete.
Dubois County scored two runs on one hit in the first inning. DH Alec Mueller singled with one out. First baseman Nick Gobert was hit by a pitch. Left fielder Drake McNamara walked, as did second baseman Morgan DePew to force in the first Bomber score. Catcher Greg Jones followed with a sacrifice fly for the early 2-0 advantage.
The Bombers added a pair in the second inning. Shortstop Thomas Rea and right fielder Noah Sadler both singled with one out. Mueller followed with a double to make it a 4-0 game.
Fulton tallied their only score of the night in the third. After reaching on an error, Griffin Neuer came home on a sacrifice fly by Brad Baldwin. Poe limited Fulton to that single unearned run on three hits in six innings of work.
Zach Freeman and Derek Flaugher came out of the Bomber bullpen to hold the high-powered Railroader attack at bay for the rest of the game.
The Bombers added four runs in the eighth inning, effectively putting the game out of reach. Two walks, a sacrifice hit, and a wild pitch scored Jones. Rea chipped in an RBI single. Sadler bounced a triple off of the League Stadium fence, scoring Rea. Gobert brought Sadler in with a line drive double down the left field line to round out the scoring.
Poe picks up the victory to join teammate Devin Williams with two wins. Poe drops his ERA to a nifty 0.68. Haydon falls to 1-2 for Fulton.
Sadler and Rea had three hits each. Both scored twice and had an RBI. Mueller added a pair of hits and two RBIs.
Although Dubois County now sits atop the OVL standings, there is a 3-team logjam just one game behind them. Fulton, Madisonville, and Hopkinsville are all at an even .500 on the young season, just one game off the pace. Last place Owensboro is only two games behind the league leaders.
The Bombers travel to Madisonville tonight to face the Miners (4-4). Fulton (5-5) travels to Hopkinsville (4-4).
