Bombers at home tonight after win at Madisonville

IMG_1790-640x320One of the last signees for this year’s Bombers squad was Jasper’s Nick Gobert. There were more than a few smiles on the faces of local fans and team management when word came down that Nick was coming home again.

One of the themes of the Bombers first season win last night against the Madisonville Miners had a familiar ring. “Nick’s coming home again.” Gobert came to the plate four times. He reached base all four times on two singles and a pair of walks . . . and he came home every time, scoring half of the Bombers eight runs.

Meanwhile, another returning Bomber, Evansville’s Devin Williams (Olney Central) tossed eight outstanding innings, limiting the Miners to one run on four hits and four walks, while striking out five.

All told, the Bombers offense tallied nine hits, three by third baseman Alex Ralph (Bellarmine) in addition to the two by Gobert, who is now hitting .600 after three games.

Dubois County scored three times in the top of the first. Miners starting pitcher Colton Nussel hit the first two Bomber batters, Noah Sadler (Heartland CC) and Jacob Snodgrass (Olney Central). A single by Gobert loaded the bases before any Bombers had been retired. Three Miners errors and an RBI single by Ralph produced a 3-0 early advantage.

Madisonville got their only run of the evening on a walk, a hit, and a sacrifice fly in the second.

Gobert, Morgan DePew (St. Joseph’s), and Ralph all singled in the third, producing the Bombers’ fourth run.

In the fifth, Gobert led off with a walk. He stole second, and scored his third run of the night on a single by USI’s Drake McNamara.

Poseyville’s Nick Scheller (Miami of Ohio) relieved Williams in a 1-2-3 ninth.

Williams, who has signed to pitch for USI next year, gets credit for the Bombers first season win.

The Bombers will be back in action at League Stadium tonight, facing the Hopkinsville Hoppers (0-2). It will also represent the debut of the “More For Your Money Monday” concessions promotio
