Beta Gamma January 2024 minutes
Beta Gamma Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary sorority for women educators, met for their regular monthly meeting on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at Holy Family Fellowship Hall. President Ann Buechler called the meeting to order and welcomed twenty-one members. The guest speaker was Angie Anderson from Memorial Hospital. Anderson spoke on her position as Volunteer Services and the Gift Shop manager. She informed all of the many opportunities and roles the volunteers fill at the hospital. She made a special presentation to Beta Gamma Sister and Memorial Hospital volunteer Brenda Hurm to recognize her for her many hospital service hours.
Following the speaker, Chaplain Pat Seger read the devotions. The reading was titled “Happy New Year”.
Secretary Kathy Bachman made a Roll Call of members. Members responded by telling of a book they were reading or recently read. The minutes of the previous meeting were sent via email. The minutes were approved on a motion made by Bonnie Wininger and seconded by Margaret Buechler. Treasurer Denise Heeke emailed the financial report.
Standing Committee reports followed.
Paula Peter reported for Altruistic. She reminded members to submit their reported hours and donations made in the name of Alpha Delta Kappa to her by the end of February.
Susan McGovren, with Bylaws, sent word that she continues to work on updating the Policies and Procedures and will present the updated Bylaws for review at the February meeting.
Stella Bennett reported for Courtesy. She had sent a congratulations card to Clara Fromme to recognize her for being named a top Christmas tree decorator in the Christmas Tree Decorating contest at the Dubois County Museum.
Clara Fromme with Fraternity Ed asked members to gather in groups and discuss what makes Alpha Delta Kappa vital to them. Common in all groups were feelings of fellowship, working together and supporting others.
Brenda Hurm spoke on Membership. She spoke of a possible new member and asked members to ask other teachers to join our organization.
Brooke Elrod was not present to speak on the Academic Grant. Our scholarship is for a college education major, male or female, planning on student teaching in the Fall of 2024 or the Spring of 2025. The application form is available now.
Ruth Gehlhausen spoke on the summer outing. She had different suggestions and asked for feedback.
Under New Business
An Officer/committee interest inventory form was distributed to each member present. Members are to fill it out and return it to the next meeting.
President Buechler gave an update on member Denise Heeke. Denise continues to recover at home from a severely broken leg injury she sustained before Christmas.
A note of resignation was received from Andrea Gehlhausen. The Chapter regretfully approves her resignation on a motion made by Connie Messmer Brenner and seconded by Stella Bennett.
A discussion was held on the amounts paid in Academic Grants and Altruistic donations.
President Buechler had information on purchasing Badge Holders for $6.00 from a Nebraska Chapter. Members could sign up to purchase.
President Buechler relayed a request from State President Laurel Van Dyke asking for a passionate person to step up and be part of the state’s committee for the Longest Day/Alzheimer’s Association.
The Winter Executive Board meeting will be held in Indianapolis on February 17, 2024. Clara Fromme, Stella Bennett and Ann Buechler plan to attend.
The Indiana State Convention will be held April 26-27 at Indiana State University in Terre Haute.
In Announcements
The January Hostess Committee of Sandy Miller, Shelley Weinzapfel, Jane Hunefeld and Sue Ann Burns were thanked. The taco bar and desserts were enjoyed.
Celebrating birthdays in January are Johnnie Heeke on the 17th, Donna Koval on the 29th and Kathy Knust on the 30th.
The winner of the Active Teacher drawing was Connie Messmer Brenner.
The winner of the Attendance prize drawing was Christine Betz. In a second drawing, Kristy Dilger and Marie Patton were drawn as the winners of the Museum’s free admission coupons drawing.
The next meeting will be held on February 8, 2024, at 3:45 p.m. at Holy Family Fellowship Hall. Our speaker will be Janet Schnell. She will be speaking about the Survivors of Suicide Organization.
All gathered and sang “The Lamp of Alpha Delta Kappa.”
