The City of Huntingburg has a long history of providing our residents and industry with excellent water quality, which is of utmost importance and a point of pride to me, our utility board, and our water department employees. Our staff goes through extensive training and testing to work in the water department, and when a…
I love Spencer County. Every time I visit, I receive a welcome that embodies the character and passion of the people who live there. In January, I had the honor of participating in the Lincolnland Economic Development Corporation’s annual meeting. I was overwhelmed with the graciousness of the more-than 300 people who attended that luncheon…
The tragedy that is now occurring in Venezuela is not between “socialism” and “capitalism,” as Donald Trump and Mike Pence would have you believe. It is, as usual, between the imposition of authoritarianism and something like a real desire for freedom. The combatants are not fighting over the lessons found in some dry economic textbook….
At the January meeting of Lincolnland Economic Development Corporation, Greg Merle said, “there’s no such thing as dirty coal.” I confirmed his statement with him in person after the meeting. As a coal trader, coal probably seems pretty clean to him. But I wonder if he is aware of the effects that strip mining coal…
There goes Ray Striegel writing about “traditional diesel fuel” again! What is the definition of “traditional diesel fuel” in your world, Ray? As far back as I can remember, the traditional diesel fuel was #2 diesel. But since December 1, 2014, all diesel-powered equipment in the United States has been on ultra-low sulfur clean-burning diesel…
Donald Trump now stands poised to plunge the country into months’ more chaos and turmoil, either by imposing another ruinous government shutdown or by imposing his alleged emergency powers. That his fantasy wall is the fantasy solution to a fantasy invasion is demonstrated by the fact that even when he was supported by a supine…
Local citizens and public health groups have stood together in opposition to the proposed coal-to-diesel refinery in Dale. Speakers at the public hearing on December 5 in Lincoln City opposed the project by a seven-to-one ratio. Which is why it was surprising that a letter by Ray Striegel in December (“Dale Town Council president speaks…
On Friday, January 25, I asked Greg Merle, president of Riverview Energy, whether his pipe dream of a toxic coal-to-diesel plant in Dale has any financing. His answer was “I’m working on it.” In other words, no financing. But what has his straw-to-gold scheme already cost the people of Dale and the rest of Indiana? Lincolnland Economic…
Evansville Courier & Press writer Gordon Engelhardt compared Huntingburg Memorial Gymnasium to an “old barn” in his article posted in the paper this past Sunday. He wrote, “With McCarty in the house, or historic old barn to be more accurate, Heritage Hills coach Nate Hawkins said the entire Patriots’ team was energized,” in the article published…
Brian Howey reported in his Evansville Sunday Courier column of January 6, 2019, that Indiana Manufacturing Association President, Brian Burton said, “45 percent of the Hoosier workforce will be retiring in the next decade.” Governor Holcomb has called this “the ‘silver tusnami’ with 10,000 American Baby Boomers retiring each week. Indiana will need to be filling…
