Arthur G. Mathies, 87

Arthur G. Mathies, 87, of Jasper, Indiana passed away at 10:55 a.m. Thursday, January 1, 2015, at Memorial Hospital & Health Care Center in Jasper.
He was born at Dubois, Indiana on November 29, 1927 to Bernard and Margaret (Hoffman) Mathies. He married Virginia Stenftenagel on October 18, 1952 in St. Mary Catholic Church in Ireland.
Arthur graduated from Dubois High School and was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict in the 5th Combat Infantry Division. He retired from Kimball International (The former Jasper Corporation) after working there for 47 years.
He is a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Ireland, Jasper Knight of Columbus, V.F.W. Post # 673, American Legion Post # 147 and the Ireland Sportsman Club.
Arthur enjoyed playing cards. He was a fan of St. Louis Cardinals baseball and IU basketball. He also enjoyed watching the History Channel.
He is survived by his wife Virginia Mathies; daughters, Donna Arensman and husband Pete and Myra Schroeder and husband Andy, both of Jasper; sons, Keith Mathies and companion Debbie Sattler, of Jasper and Kevin Mathies and wife Angela, of St. Anthony; nieces and nephews; five grandchildren, Nicole Boone, Michelle Verkamp, Andy Schroeder, Brittany Schroeder and Dakota Bell; two step-grandchildren, Ashley Meiring and Lauren Verkamp; great-grandchildren, Ashtyn Boone, Mitchell Verkamp, Brynlee Schroeder, Grady Schroeder; two step-great-grandchildren Olivia Meiring, Ella Verkamp; brother, Allen Mathies and wife Diane, of Jasper; sisters, Doris Lee Hohler of Celestine, Alvenia Uebelhor and husband James, of Schnellville, and Virginia Love of Pikeville, Ky.
Preceding him in death are one sister, Yvonne Mathies who died in infancy and two brothers, Leroy and Gerald Mathies.
Funeral services for Arthur Mathies will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 5, 2015, in St. Mary Catholic Church in Ireland with burial to follow in St. Mary Cemetery. V.F.W. Post # 673 will conduct military grave side rites.
Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Sunday, January 4, 2015, at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church or to Lange –Fuhs Cancer Center.
