Annual Soil and Water Conservation meeting features Dr. Fred Whitford
The Dubois County Soil and Water Conservation District is pleased to invite all County residents to its 70th Annual Meeting at the Huntingburg Event Center on Thursday, February 4 at 6:30 p.m. EST.
The featured speaker is Fred Whitford. Whitford is an author, Purdue professor and Director of the Purdue Pesticide Program. Dr. Whitford will be speaking on the history of the Purdue Extension Service in Dubois County. His presentation will feature historical photos and stories from farms around the county (a presentation that may include your grandparent’s farm).
The SWCD meeting agenda also includes the election of an SWCD supervisor. Greg Hoffman decided to leave the board of supervisors after six years of service, and Glenn Goeppner has agreed to be on the ballot.
To be eligible to serve as an elected supervisor, the candidate must be of voting age and maintain their permanent residence in the district. SWCD supervisors are part of a governmental organization responsible for the wise management of Indiana’s soil and water resources and the environment in which we live.
Serving on the SWCD Board is a great responsibility but is also an opportunity for a person to make a difference in their county. The SWCD also takes nominations from the floor, so anyone interested in serving a 3-year term may place their name on the ballot that evening.
Capping off the evening will be the presentation of the Otto J. Bauer Conservation Farmer of the Year Award and the OFS Forest Stewardship Award. Dubois County’s River Friendly Farmer will be recognized as well.
Tickets for the catered meal cost $7.50, and are available from all supervisors or by calling 812-482-1171 Ext. 3. Please contact the office by January 29. All Dubois County residents are encouraged to attend. There is no charge to attend the business meeting.
The SWCD will hold a short reorganization meeting immediately following the annual meeting.
