Anna Mae Schlachter, 100, Jasper

Anna Mae Schlachter, 100, of Jasper, passed away surrounded by family at 10:55 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at Brookside Village in Jasper.

Anna Mae was born in Celestine, Ind., on August 28, 1926, to Frank and Theresia (Nordhoff) Knies. 

She married her husband of 65 years, Edgar F. Schlachter, on October 18, 1947, at St. Celestine Catholic Church in Celestine, Indiana. He preceded her in death on July 21, 2013.

She was a homemaker.

Anna Mae was dedicated in her faith; she and her husband, Edgar, were founding members of Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper, and they both volunteered for the Parish in many capacities throughout their years there. She was a member of the Blessed Sodality at Holy Family and the Jasper D of I.

Anna Mae was an accomplished seamstress and an avid reader. She also enjoyed quilting and crocheting, making many prayer shawls for the parish, and loved spending time with family and friends. 

She is survived by one daughter, Diane (Alan) Begle of Ferdinand; two sons, Mark (Melissa) Schlachter of Jasper and Gary (Christine) Schlachter of Apex, N.C.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Camilla Buschkoetter of Jasper and Beatrice Knies of Jasper.

Preceding her in death, besides her husband, are one son, Steven Schlachter; four sisters, Sally (Urb) Fuhs, Leona (Rudy) Hulsman, Helen (Hank) Vollmer, and Mary Lee (Ralph) Humbert; and three brothers, Ottie (Stella) Knies, Bob Knies, and Art (Ethel) Knies.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Anna Mae Schlachter will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper, Indiana, with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 16, 2026, at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper, Indiana, and one hour before the Mass time at the church on Saturday, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m.  The Blessed Sodality and the D of I will pray a rosary at 3:30 p.m. at the funeral home on Friday.
