Ambrose L. Schmitt, 87, Jasper

Ambrose L. Schmitt, 87, Jasper, passed away at 10:23 a.m. on Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at home.
Ambrose was born in Jasper, Indiana, on October 27, 1928 to Henry and Catherine (Stratman) Schmitt. He married Sally Sermersheim on May 15, 1954, in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper.
Ambrose was the Owner and Operator of the Dubois County Insurance Agency for over 30 years. He was a 1946 graduate of Jasper High School. He was an Army veteran who served during the Korean War.
He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper, the Serra Club, V.F.W. Post #673 and the American Legion Post #147. He was a recipient of the Brute Award. He was a choir director for 30 years at Holy Family Church and spent 70 years in the choir between St. Joseph’s and Holy Family Catholic Churches.
He enjoyed birdwatching and spending time with his grandchildren and his granddogs, Scruffles and Blacktop. He also loved history, especially reading history books about the city of Jasper.
He is survived by his wife, Sally Schmitt of Jasper; two daughters, Debbie Schmitt of Jasper and Diane Story and her husband John of Fishers; one son, Gerard Schmitt and his wife Inthira of Aurora, Ill.; three grandchildren, Taylor Story, Laura Story and Amanda Schmitt
Preceding him in death are one grandson, Arthur Michael Schmitt; five sisters, Roberta, Henrietta and Mary Catherine Schmitt, Theresa Holder, and Anna Horney; and four brothers, Sylvester, Jerome, Henry Jr., and Leo Schmitt.
Funeral services for Ambrose L. Schmitt will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, June 10, 2016, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper, with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper. V.F.W. Post #673 will conduct military graveside rites.
Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, 2016, at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper and one hour before services from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the church on Friday. Holy Family Parish will pray a rosary at 3:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
