Alois Thewes (oldest WWII Veteran in Dubois County)

Alois H.Thewes, age 94 of Celestine passed away at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday (May 25, 2011) at his home in Celestine.
He was born at Celestine, Indiana on February 15, 1917 to John and Mary (Heichelbech) Thewes.
He married Martina Werner June 17, 1941 in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper.
Alois Thewes was a WWII Army Veteran (oldest Dubois County Veteran ) and retired from the Dubois County Highway Department and a Life Long Farmer in the Celestine Community. He also worked for the Indiana State Highway Department form many years.
He is a member of St. Celestine Catholic Church – Celestine Community Club – American Legion Post #147 in Jasper.
He enjoyed cutting fire wood and gardening and loved playing Sheephead.

32 grandchildren , 28 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.
One sister, Frances Jochum, Jasper, IN
Preceding him in death are one son, Gerald Thewes and one daughter Doris Fickas. Two brothers, Albert, Johnny Thewes and four sisters, Theresia Hentrup, Tillie Verkamp, Minnie Verkamp, Sr. Mary Rosita Thewes .
Funeral services for Alois Thewes will be held at `11:00 a.m. Monday (May 30, 2011) in st. Celestine Catholic Church with burial to follow in St. Celestine Cemetery. American Legion Post # 147 will conduct military grave side rites.
Friends may call from 11-8 p.m. Sunday at the Becher & Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Celestine Catholic Church or to a favorite charity.
