A Christmas home

Kayla shared a hug with her mother, Sandy and two sisters, Bailey and Lexie, and her son, Jaxon, at the conclusion of the ceremony.

Habitat for Humanity of Dubois County presented its most recent partner family with the keys to their home in a special celebration Saturday morning.

Kayla Schmitt and her two children, Jaxon and Grace, plan on celebrating Christmas in their Huntingburg home thanks to the tremendous efforts of the many volunteers and businesses involved in constructing the home. Originally scheduled for completion in early spring, by the “grace of God,” Habitat was able to complete it in record time.

Here is a story from the groundbreaking ceremony that took place in August.

A large crowd gathered in the living room of Kayla’s new home for the special event.
Amber Kellams, a board member and family support committee member, tried not to cry during the ceremony as she spoke of Kayla’s efforts to help complete the home.
Grace beamed while members of the board offered remarks during the ceremony.
Jeremy Foxen, the construction manager for the project, handed Kayla the keys to the home.
Kayla gave Jeremy a tearful hug.
Kayla hugged Dan Harrison, co-construction manager with Habitat, after receiving her keys.
Grace ran through the new home, which features an expansive back deck.
Jaxon peeked in from the back door.
Grace ran out the front door of her new home while munching on one of the treats from the celebration.
“Watch this!” Jaxon yelled before launching from his new porch.
Jaxon loves the closet in his new room.
