Three Benedictine Sisters celebrate 50th Jubilee

Three Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their monastic profession on Saturday, June 18, at Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand.

The Jubilee Mass will be at 1 p.m. EDT in the monastery church. A reception for family and friends will follow in St. Gertrude Hall in the monastery.

The jubilarians, Sister Jennifer Miller, Sister Joyce Marie Newton, and Sister Marilyn Schroering, entered Monastery Immaculate Conception in 1964 and professed their monastic vows in 1966.

Sister Jennifer, from Evansville, served as an elementary teacher at St. Theresa School in Evansville and at Sts. Peter and Paul School in Haubstadt and as a secondary school teacher at Rex Mundi High School and Mater Dei High School, both in Evansville.  She served as director of the Newman Center at the University of Evansville, as the director of campus ministry and the Newman Center at Purdue University, and as the diocesan director of youth ministry for the Diocese of Evansville.  She was a pastoral associate at the Evansville parishes of St. Theresa, Resurrection, and St. Joseph.  Currently, Sister Jennifer

serves as a chaplain for the Evansville VNA hospice program.

Sister Joyce Marie, from Bardstown, Kentucky, served as an elementary teacher at Holy Redeemer School, Holy Rosary School, St. Joseph School, all in Evansville, Sts. Peter and Paul School and St. James School, both in Haubstadt, and St. Joseph Catholic School in Corydon.  She also served as principal at St. John School in Elberfeld and at Sts. Peter and Paul School in Haubstadt.  Sister Joyce Marie currently works in supportive services at the monastery.

Sister Marilyn Schroering

Sister Marilyn, from Jasper, served as an elementary teacher at St. Philip School in St. Philip, Sts. Peter and Paul School in Haubstadt, Holy Spirit School in Evansville, and Holy Redeemer School in Evansville.  She worked as a proctor at Marian Heights Academy in Ferdinand.  She served as principal at Holy Family School in Jasper, and at Holy Spirit School and St. Joseph (County) School, both in Evansville.  She was a sales associate in the monastery’s gift shop, director of facilities at Kordes Retreat Center, and worked in the monastery kitchen.  Currently, Sister Marilyn works in supportive services at the monastery.

Founded in 1867, the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand currently number 146 and serve in areas of education, parish work, health care, retreat and spirituality work, social services, counseling, and mission work in Indiana, Kentucky, and Peru.
