Only 6 months to get used to dialing 10 digits

Indiana’s newest telephone area code – 930 – will be introduced this year. It will overlay the entire 812 area code that has been largely unchanged since 1947.

Starting Saturday, March 1, consumers in the 812 area code are being urged to begin using ten-digit dialing rather than seven. Consumers in the 812 area code will only have six months to adjust to ten-digit dialing for local calls. In September, all calls will have to be made using 10-digit dialing.

This is recommended so consumers have ample time to adjust to 10-digit dialing.

The new area code is needed because of the dwindling supply of available telephone numbers in the 812 area code. Without 930, the supply of available numbers for southern and south-central Indiana would run out in 2015
