3 vehicles totaled, 1 person taken to hospital after 4-vehicle crash
Three vehicles were totaled and one person taken to the hospital with injuries in a four-vehicle crash on State Road 56 Thursday at about noon.
According to police, Canton A. Wolf, 20, of Winslow, was westbound on State Road 56 in a 1999 Ford Ranger when he failed to notice the vehicle in front of him had stopped to make a left turn onto 180 North. Wolf’s pickup crashed into the 1990 Buick Century driven by Bette K. Gibson, 66, of Loogootee.
The impact pushed Gibson’s car into an eastbound 2017 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Rachel M. Uebelhor, 45, of Jasper. The impact caused the Silverado’s front driver’s side tire to come off and fly across the road before striking a concrete barrier wall and then bouncing into the passenger door of a 2008 Chevrolet driven by Marlene N. Schmitt, 72, of Jasper.
Wolf’s vehicle came to a rest off the north side of State Road 56 facing west. Gibson’s Buick ended up in the eastbound lane facing north. The Silverado ended up in the eastbound lane facing east about 100 feet down the road from where the crash took place. The vehicle hit with the tire pulled off the road onto 180 North.
Gibson complained of back and neck pain and was taken to Memorial Hospital by ambulance.
Uebelhor complained of an abrasion to her wrist and refused treatment at the scene.
Police considered the Ford Ranger, Buick Century and Chevrolet Silverado total losses. They were towed from the scene by a Uebelhor & Sons wrecker and a Ruxer wrecker. Police estimated the Chevrolet hit with the tire had about a $1,000 in damages and was driven from the scene.
Jasper Police Department, Jasper Volunteer Fire Department, Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services also responded to the incident.

So where was THIS driver’s head??? A couple of weeks ago a young driver’s inattention/distraction cost the life of an innocent wife and mother. Thankfully, this crash didn’t result in loss of life, but c’mon people – this scenario is repeated again and again – way too often – what’s going on??? Put your toys away, go to bed earlier, and DRIVE RESPONSIBLY with a clear, attentive head-up mindset!
