2025 Memorial Day Service

The Dubois County Veterans Council hosted its Annual Memorial Day Observance on Saturday, May 24, 2025, on the Courthouse Square.

David Stockberger, a U.S. Navy veteran and member of American Legion Post 147, served as Master of Ceremonies for the event. Stockberger is also affiliated with the Legion Riders, 40/8, and Navy Club Ship #90 in Jasper, and currently serves as President of the Dubois County Veterans Council.

During the ceremony, the family of MSgt. Dennis L. Englert, United States Marine Corps (Retired), this year’s deceased veteran being honored, was presented with a special plaque and a wreath honoring his service. Englert, born in Huntingburg, Indiana, on March 24, 1951, passed away on February 27, 2024.

The service also honored all veterans who have passed since last year’s Memorial Day Service. Their names were read off and accompanied by a bell ceremony.

The ceremony closed with a 21-Gun Salute and the playing of “Taps.”

The Color Guard lowers the flag to half-staff.
Father Luke Hassler, Pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Ireland, Indiana, gave the opening blessing and the benediction for the ceremony.
The Navy Club places flowers on the memorial in recognition of the sailors who have been lost.
Dave Englert spoke fondly of he and his brother’s service during the ceremony.
Msgt. Englert’s widow, Mary Frances, and daughter, Jeanette Wagner, accepted a plaque in honor of her husband.
The family proceeded to the memorial to place a wreath in honor of Msgt. Englert.
Bud Rasche rang a bell in honor of the fallen as the names are read off.
John Ackerman, an Army veteran, bows his head as the names of the fallen are recognized.
Brian Wigand bows his head as the names of the fallen are read.
